    My question deals how to reconcile two seemingly contradictory pieces of advice among leading instructors: (1) to “move off the ball” — namely, to send my left shoulder in back of the ball for a powerful weight shift AND (2) to keep my head still — namely, to keep rotating around a fixed and stable center of rotation.

    These two teachings are, as you say, contradictory. You’ll have to choose one or the other. if you shift your wait to your back foot, you’re head isn’t going to stay completely still and you’re not going to rotate around a fixed center of rotation. The first option is certainly more powerful and, in my opinion, better. However, in order to make a proper wait shift back and maintain balance throughout the swing, the first move down needs to be with your hips

    This guy’s a quack. If you want to know how to hit a golf ball properly, you need a golfing machine instructor, period.

    Actually, I’m quite highly qualified. For starters I’m a PGA member, have taught 100s of lessons, written numerous golf articles for magazines like US Airways Magazine, run a golf instructional website w/ thousands of members, won the Pinnacle Distance Challenge with a 381-yard televised drive, posted rounds of golf in the 60s from the back tees in pro tournaments, etc.

    The golfing machine has produced some good instructors & players – but there are also many other effective swing styles! :-)

    I agree there are many different ways to swing a golf club. However, from waist high to waist high, roughly, is where a great golf swing emerges. For instance, Jim Furyk is known for his swing being so unorthodox, however through the impact interval his fundamentals are sound. There really is only one proper way to swing a golf club through the impact interval. Your qualifications are of no importance. In this country all you need to teach golf, apparently, is a golf club and a mouth.

    I disagree with a lot of this actually.

    1) It isn’t necessarily a case of either or – golf isn’t always so black & white. There are relevant shades of grey too.

    2) It is possible to make a weight shift and still keep your head relatively still and pivot around a fixed point.

    3) Proper is a dangerous word to use in golf. Something can be proper relative to a certain swing method, but it doesn’t mean it is absolutely proper.

    4) You can still maintain balance in the swing w/o moving w/ the hips first.

    both points are correct, but the weight shift can only really be minimal and the effect of the weight shift would only really serve the purpose of maintaining a certain flow throughout the swing, as you’ve said. But then this would throw out the purpose of the weight shift being for power. So some power could be generated, but not much. Some weight shift could happen while rotating around a fixed point, but not much.

    And again, you’ll never maximize all aspects of a good golf swing without having the hips start the down swing. It’s pure physics.

    Again, I don’t believe that to be a true statement. Even through impact, there are many successful variations to get the job done. There is no one “proper” way to do it.

    I’m happy to engage in a constructive debate with you, however, belittling and insulting another person does nothing to further the discussion.

    The weight should be at the very least moving to the front side during the downswing.Depending on the shot being played and the height you wish to achieves leads to how much.
    But the most important position or aspect of the swing is your hand positions at impact.You have to have a straight top handand a bent bottom hand.You can simply maintain that angle through the swing or release hand action to get there, which is a bit more powerful.Your weight will get there if you control the wedge right

    @flameout12345 – There’s a video on tension in the channel. Take a look at that for an idea on how to get some of the hardness out of your swing.
